The Empire Grows, But Are They The Winners?

GrandersonYankees receive:

  • OF Curtis Granderson (from DET)

D-backs receive:

  • RHP Edwin Jackson (from DET)
  • RHP Ian Kennedy (from NYY)

Tigers receive:

  • RHP Max Scherzer (from ARI)
  • LHP Daniel Schlereth (from ARI)
  • OF Austin Jackson (from NYY)
  • LHP Phil Coke (from NYY)

Since the Yankees got the best player in the trade, they got the better end of the deal, right?  Not so fast.  Curtis Granderson obviously isn’t going to hurt the team, but let’s take a look at some things.

They gave up their best left handed reliever in Phil Coke, which leaves them with the Damaso Marte. They also gave up a top 40 prospect in Austin Jackson who was Granderson-like in AAA Scranton last season, hitting .300 with 24 steals.  As for Ian Kennedy, all we’ve heard about is his potential, but he hasn’t shown much.

If I’m a Yankee fan, though, here’s what I don’t understand.  Why give up players when guys like Jason Bay and Matt Holliday are out there?  It’s not like the Yankees are afraid to spend the money.  And if you are going to shop players, why not go pitching (i.e. Roy Halladay)?

As for the other teams involved in the trade, I love what the Tigers got.  If Max Scherzer doesn’t work out as a starter, with his makeup he’ll be more than fine as a closer.  This trade strengthens their bullpen and Jackson has the potential to be a Granderson-type player.

I love what the Diamondbacks did as well.  To only give up Scherzer and Daniel Schlereth and get All-Star Edwin Jackson and Kennedy is a huge win for this club, especially if Kennedy turns out to be what everyone expected.  With a rotation of Brandon Webb, Dan Haren, Jackson, and Kennedy, you have got to be pleased heading into next season if you’re a D-backs fan.
