71% of Americans Think They Can Kick It

ShaunI recently saw a poll that was taken after Shaun Suisham missed a 23-yard field goal when the Redskins played the Saints.  I was shocked to see that 71% of Americans honestly though that, in a situation like Suisham’s, they could have made a field goal from that distance.  That’s about as ridiculous as 80% of Americans saying that they could hit a home run in a round of the home run derby.

Lets get real people, you get one chance to get it over the cross bar.  I say that half of that 71% wouldn’t even get the ball off the damn ground.  Kicking isn’t as easy as it looks.  Not to mention you have to get it over the massive linemen that typically stand 6’4 and above.  Realistically, I would say that about 20% couldn’t make it over them.

So, let’s see.  I’m not too good with math, but I think that already eliminates about 55.5% of the 71% who think they can kick.  We are now left with about 15.5% who have a realistic shot, and that’s excluding missing wide left/right.

Keep dreaming, people.
