If you are the Oakland Raiders, and you are smart, you have to be excited by what the Philadelphia Eagles did a few days ago. They released what should be your starting QB in Jeff Garcia. You, along with 31 other teams in the NFL, cannot win with JaMarcus Russell playing quarterback. It’s just not going to happen. Al Davis, you need to bite the bullet, swallow your pride, admit you guys made the wrong selection in the draft, and bench Russell.
So far this year Russell has 506 passing yards with 1 TD and 4 INTs, completing 39.8 percent of his passes. Terry Schiavo would have better numbers than Russell. Like I said before the season started, Garcia shouldn’t have been cut and should be starting now.
I understand they gave Russell $60 million and you don’t want to see that sitting on the sidelines, but there comes a point in time where you have to forget about that and decide what’s more important. Is it letting your $60 million waste-of-a-QB ruin your franchise, or do you want to win? If you option number two, then you have to sign Garcia. The guy knows how to win football games.
The team has talent, they really do. Darren McFadden and Michael Bush have all the talent in the world and have the potential to be one of the best backfields in football. You wouldn’t know it because defenses stack 8 in the box, daring Russell to throw. Louis Murphy has shown signs of being a star in this league. Zack Miller has the talent and the hands to be an elite tight end. Again, like I said before the season started, their defense isn’t that bad. They just have bad numbers because they’re on the field for 35-40 minutes a game due to Russell’s play.
So Al Davis here is my message to you: Your division sucks. Go get Garcia while the season is still young and give those insane Raider fans of yours a reason to come to the games.
I’m a Garcia mark too but there is no way Al Davis will go near Garcia since it wouldn’t be an expensive enough move to tie up a team for years like he seems to enjoy doing.
I cannot figure out at all why Carolina hasn’t gone after Garcia the minute we cut him either. Delhomme was mostly dreadful and is one of the biggest underachievers in the league (possibly because people overrated him for years).
Moreover, I can’t figure out why, above other players, the Eagles cut Garcia in the first place. In my humble opinion, it can’t hurt to keep good players around, even if you don’t necessarily ‘need’ them (though I would even argue that we MAY still need him if McNabb comes back and takes a hit to the ribs or something). Bottom line for me is that if you have a choice between cutting Good Player You Don’t Need and Bad Player You Don’t Really Need, the choice should be the latter, every time. We STILL refuse to get Reggie Brown. I can sort of see where one can defend cutting Baskett instead of Brown but why on earth would you cut one of the (in my mind) great QBs of the last decade instead of someone like Brown?
The only credible, and I say that lightly, argument that I heard in favor of cutting Garcia was that he wouldn’t be getting much playing time so it was a nice thing to do…yeah, a nice gesture until someone like the Redskins picks him up and he manages to beat us.
Carolina justed signed the GREAT AJ Feeley that’s why they don’t need Garcia!!! Duhh! haha.
