Take Them Out of the Ball Game: Thoughts by Bobby Becker

BondsAs the great pastime of America passes our time, I wonder how American (in the spirit of inquisitive fairness) MLB really is. Shaken by the steroid controversy, which results partially because of a poor commissioner, I suppose one should be thankful that MLB survives. Does it really deserve to, though?

Baseball’s best player is arguably Alex Rodriguez, and throughout his career, he has been a statistical watermark of excellence whose statistical potential has in fact commanded such large contracts. As we all know, he has recently been discovered to be a proven cheater, one out of a hundred. Sucks, don’t it?

What “sucks” more is the injustice of MLB, that the other 99 players will not be named for the foreseeable future. The most obvious reasoning for such clandestine tomfoolery is that the names are likely all the big, bad boys of baseball. If said names are revealed, the sport would probably collapse. And you know, it’s MLB’s own fault.

The record books are already ruined beyond repair, and for what? A temporary resurgence in baseball interest, in the midst of football clearly eclipsing baseball as the American sport? Don’t get me wrong, I am against many things in the NFL, but at least they have their record books straight. Since MLB is content with defacing history, perhaps they could be so kind as to risk their own history by producing a simple list, a piece of paper?

Thanks Bobby!
